Umut Ozturk tops the MSPT prize list after a record-breaking victory
At the MSPT Spade Poker Championship tournament in Michigan, Umut Ozturk achieved the biggest victory of his career and became the all-time series leader in prize money.
Last weekend, the second-ever Major Series of Poker: The Tour (MSPT) event, called the Spade Poker Championship, took place at FireKeepers Casino in Michigan. The Main Event, with a $1,110 buy-in, attracted a record 2,442 entries, more than doubling the guaranteed prize pool of $1,000,000 — the total prize pool reached $2,367,240. This event became one of the season’s highlights, delivering impressive results for both the winner and the other final table participants. Umut Ozturk’s Victory and His Rise to the Top of the MSPT Rankings The main star of the tournament was two-time MSPT Player of the Year, Umut Ozturk, who claimed victory and took home the top prize of $280,290. For Ozturk, a lawyer from Minnesota, this was the biggest win of his career. It also marked his third MSPT title. In a post-win interview, Ozturk shared a personal story: the last time he was at FireKeepers in May, his mother received a terminal diagnosis, and he had to rush home. She passed away a few months later, and Ozturk promised himself that when he returned to Michigan, he would win a tournament. As he noted, even though his mother was not physically present, he felt her support throughout the weekend and dedicated this success to her. This victory propelled Umut Ozturk to the top of the all-time MSPT earnings list. His total MSPT tournament winnings now stand at $1,337,117. Ozturk became one of only five players to join the prestigious “MSPT Millionaires” club, and notably, he achieved all of this starting from his first MSPT cash in 2018. Key Final Table Moments and Hands Many well-known players took part in the tournament, and the final table was tense and action-packed. One of the key hands for Ozturk came when eight players remained. He raised from the cutoff, after which pro Frank Lagodich moved all-in from the button. The blinds folded, and Ozturk called, holding just over five million chips. Ozturk had two black tens, while Lagodich held ace-eight of spades. On the flop, Lagodich picked up a gutshot straight draw, but the turn and river didn’t improve his hand, allowing Ozturk to double up — a turning point on his road to victory. After that, Greg Wiggins did most of the work eliminating opponents at the final table. In heads-up play, Ozturk and Wiggins made a deal, with the title going to Ozturk thanks to a slight chip lead. MSPT Player of the Year Race Update In the current 17th season of the MSPT, the race for Player of the Year remains intense. At the moment, Mike Wilklow leads with 8,541 points. He is followed by two former title holders: Josh Reichard (7,887 points) and reigning champion Jacob Long (7,667 points). With the final quarter of the year ahead, the leaderboard could still change after the upcoming stops. Upcoming MSPT Events Season 17 of the MSPT continues, with more major events on the horizon. From October 28 to November 1, the MSPT Festival will take place at Grand Falls Casino, near Sioux Falls. Then, from November 3 to 8, the series moves to Riverside Casino in Iowa. Special attention is on the first joint MSPT and Seminole Hard Rock event, which will be part of the Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open from November 17 to December 2. These tournaments promise strong fields and large prize pools.
